2016 handcrafted calendar–bright days ahead

What better way is there to ring in a new year–not counting those midnight champagne kisses–than by making a handcrafted calendar?

I’m excited for 2016. For me personally, I sure hope it is better than 2015. What’s more, I am looking forward to embark on some exciting new adventures that I have been keeping under wraps.

Today though, is a little sad, since it marks my last post as a Robin’s Nest Design Team Member. The Robin’s Nest was my first design team and the gang there will always hold a special place in my heart.

Please visit the Robin’s Nest and see the tutorial for this 2016 desktop star calendar.

Also, as I promise in that post, here is the 2016 mini calendar I created. Please feel free to download and use it for your crafting projects.

Angels we have seen on cards

Angel-card--by-Betsy-Skagen-of-Paper-Calliope-108

I have a few angels at my house. By a few I mean a whole tree full.So I guess you could say I have a fondness for vintage angels.

You can see the tutorial for this mixed media card, which features vintage angels, today at the ColourArte blog.

Adding some color into winter days

Adding some color into winter days

When the beautiful colors of fall have disappeared, the scenery can get sometimes pretty stark up here in the Northland. I try to add as much color as possible indoors and out to my winter days.

You can see how I decorated my lilac trees last year. If only the snow always stayed that pretty! I can tell you that is not going to happen when you live in the heart of the city.

This year, I have already begun working on adding some indoor color. Here is a mixed media tag I made this week full of rich, vibrant color. I shared the tutorial on the ColourArte site. I hope you check it out. Read the rest of this entry

Paper-Calliope-for-ColourArte-Dragon-Eyes---final-7

With Halloween coming, all the witches and wizards need to make sure they are amply supplied with toes of frog and eyes of dragons (sorry Mr. Shakespeare). I got busy in my studio and brewed up this altered art concoction for the folks at ColourArte.

You know the expression, a day late and a dollar short? Well since I’m eight months late with my 12 Tags of 2015, it’s a good thing you can’t put a value on art or I would be short a whole wad of moolah.

I may be late, but I sure as heck had a lot of fun creating the Tim Holtz August 2015 Tag. To see the tutorial for what ended up being layer upon layer of Halloween goodness, please visit my post on Altered Pages.

When altered art turns deadly–your number is up

When altered art turns deadly–your number is up

I was making Halloween tags out of bingo cards the other day when my husband quipped “my number is up”.  Being that I’m the wordsmith, I don’t know why it is that he remembered this expression and I didn’t. Maybe because he causes me so much stress. I certainly know that even if my number isn’t up, my memory certainly is.

Now where was I?…Oh yes, well he may have remembered the phrase, but I was the one who realized that I could have a lot of altered art fun with it.

Your Number is Up is actually a combination of altered art and mixed media. It plays upon the themes of numbers and bones. Please visit  ColourArte to see more details about how I made it.

One reason you haven’t heard from me recently is because my family just completed a quintessential American road trip traveling across Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and South Dakota.

We saw some of the United States’ most beautiful landscapes and national parks including Glacier National Park; Yellowstone; the Grand Tetons; the Badlands of North and South Dakota; and Mount Rushmore before returning to Minnesota, the beautiful land of 10,000 lakes. Read the rest of this entry
