Have you completed all your Valentines cards yet? Don’t run out and buy those perforated factory-made cheapos just yet. You still have time to stun someone special with a dazzling creation.

And if they don’t ooh and ahhh with enough appreciation? Well then you can retaliate by keeping all the chocolate for yourself.

As a former journalist and business writer, I have many friends in the editorial world. While our party animal reputation may not be on par with–oh say, the Kardashians–we still know how to have a good time. For example, can you think of anything that creates more rollicking merriment than a little word nerd banter?

Indeed, we are a boisterous and bawdy bunch.

Please go see the tutorial on the ColourArte blog.

I don’t think there’s any sweeter combination than Valentines and merry-go-rounds–at least if you exclude the food category. Everyone knows there’s nothing sweeter than a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

This carousel features glittering lights, prancing horses in perfect pastels and mid-century sweethearts all dolled up for the holiday.  Read the rest of this entry

Breaking news–puppy accused of tomte-cide

Breaking news–puppy accused of tomte-cide

 Tomtes--by-Betsy-Skagen-of-Paper-Calliope-003

Ever heard of “tomte-cide”?

During the sanding process, I made the mistake of leaving the tomtes I was crafting on the kitchen counter when I left to pick up my daughter from basketball.

Boomer, the golden retriever puppy, does not have a discriminatory palate. Food. Not Food. Doesn’t matter.

Poor little tomtes–only a few survived.

You can learn how I made these cute little fellers over at Altered Pages.

Don’t let the cute face fool you. He’s guilty of tomte-cide.

Thanksgiving-Altered-Spoon-by-Betsy-Skagen-of-Paper-Calliope-217

One might not think it is possible to trash talk a national holiday, family traditions and my siblings with one little altered art project. Turkey Wattles! Think again! I managed to denigrate them all in one swoop and present my Thanksgiving altered trading spoon on the Altered Pages blog.

Shine on misfit!

Shine on misfit!

Paper-Calliope-forAltered-Pages-Reindeer-Final-1

Have you ever felt like a misfit?

Today I pay homage to the king of misfits and an entire genre of misfit art. Rudolph has been on air (and in the air) for more than 50 years and he is still a misfit. Then there is Steampunk–how can a genre that combines Victorian fashion and 19th century steam-powered industrial machinery with technology, sci-fi and fantasy not be a misfit?

I hope you check it out at the Altered Pages blog. In the meantime I hope everyone who feels like a misfit can soar as high as Rudolph. Shine on!

I use a nifty technique with pastels and embossing ink to create backgrounds for greeting cards over at Altered Pages this week. I hope you drop by for a visit. I will send you lots of  air kisses if you leave a message there.

I used the technique to make this birthday card, which I already gave to someone special. I hope she liked it. Here’s some more backgrounds I made. It’s kind of addicting.

I know Halloween hasn’t arrived yet, but I really love making Altoid altered art Christmas ornaments. (Now if I could only figure out how to use up all those mints!).

Please check out my tutorial over at Altered Pages for this Mid Century Retro Altered Art Altoid Tin Christmas Ornament.

What the hell is reflected in that lid????

Could this be craft porn taken to new extremes? I swear I don’t have naked men lounging about my studio admiring reflections of their love rods in my craft supplies. Really I don’t!

How do you know I’m telling the truth? Because if that were happening, there certainly would not be so much crafting going on.

You know the expression, a day late and a dollar short? Well since I’m eight months late with my 12 Tags of 2015, it’s a good thing you can’t put a value on art or I would be short a whole wad of moolah.

I may be late, but I sure as heck had a lot of fun creating the Tim Holtz August 2015 Tag. To see the tutorial for what ended up being layer upon layer of Halloween goodness, please visit my post on Altered Pages.

AP-Toe-Tags-Grouping-by-Betsy-Skagen-of-Paper-Calliope

How do you finish off the perfect Halloween gift? With a toe tag of course! Today, my tutorial featuring these macabre altered tags is at Altered Pages.

The tutorial shows you how to create the kind of hair-raising tags hung on bodies at the morgue (or at least a spooked up version of them). In addition to a skeletal foot, each tag features a picture of the deceased, as well as hints about the creepy cause of death–whether it be zombie, werewolf, vampire or…you get the picture.
